Following his father’s death in 1885, Cornelius took charge of the various railroads and other corporations and of the philanthropic activities. Cornelius Vanderbilt was a famous industrialist who worked in railroads and shipping. The third generation of Vanderbilts—following Cornelius and William Henry Vanderbilt—was led by three of William Henry’s four sons: Cornelius (1843–99), William Kissam (1849–1920), and George Washington (1862–1914). He gave large gifts to the New York Public Library, Columbia University, and the American Fine Arts Society. The next day, they followed French tradition with a religious ceremony at the American Church of the Holy Trinity in Paris. Approximately 6,000 volumes occupied the library's large room and, under the supervision of a junior faculty member, were available for use between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. A decade later, wedding bells rang as Cornelia married the Honorable John Francis Amherst Cecil at All Souls Church in Biltmore Village on April 27, 1924.
George and William were educated abroad in Switzerland and England, but always returned home to Biltmore for holidays and summer vacations. George Washington Vanderbilt had the least involvement with the family businesses or investments. Today, Biltmore remains a family business, with the fourth and fifth generations of George Vanderbilt’s descendants involved in day-to-day operations.
