Renee, I have seen this book but had not read it. I am not sure why we find chickens so amusing, but Interrupting Chicken will make you laugh and remind you of how funny children can be, too. Again, with the sideways format to force two pages per screen.

Both, the nephew and the niece, but mostly the nephew have this issue. We read it to the pre-schoolers in our last storytime, and they loved it. As soon as the story gets going, out jumps the little red chicke ... see all It's bedtime for the little red chicken, and Papa starts reading her a story, but she can't help herself.

Synthesis: The Interrupting Chicken is a fun spin on the old-fashioned bedtime story.

I couldn’t stop laughing as I read it — it describes him perfectly. Educational Themes: This is a perfect way to start a conversation about interrupting. They definitely like to snuggle with Mama and a book, but only when they are separate. Behavior management & social skills lessons for kindergarten, first grade, & second grade. It’s a fantastic, funny book that gently teaches why interrupting others can be annoying. Incorporating Technology and Creativity in the Classroom. Gets me every time.

When she finally settles down, Papa reverses the roles by falling asleep and interrupting the last story with his snoring. But at least I’m not alone…it appears the same thing happens in the animal kingdom. @ Joanna – it’s a great line to diffuse hot-headed situations, for sure How did I pay for this!!!??? As the father reads bedtime classics to his son, the chicken CONSTANTLY butts in in the middle of the story, shouts out the solution to the problem and ending to the story, and the begs for another. During the spring months, I love using specific themes to cover speech and language goals.

It's just so funny and sweet at the end, and it's certainly a great pick for children--especially those who like to interrupt! Each day that the kids kept all the chickens we would get a few extra minutes of play time or any other special activity so when we did lose all of the chickens a few times they knew they were losing on whatever “perk” we had been working towards if that makes sense. Little chicken is a hoot. So I got it out and decided to read it before showing it to her.

The kids enjoy the easy to relate to story and quirky illustrations and it is also a great way to start a friendly conversation about interrupting.  I saw a wonderful idea on Kim Adsit’s blog 2 years ago that has really been helpful to me in cutting down on chattiness & focusing on being good listeners in my students. Interrupting Chicken is an adorable story about a little chicken trying to wait patiently for her papa to read her a bedtime story before going to sleep. No way to enlarge the image or text at spots extremely difficult for an experienced adult reader, no way to help a struggling beginning reader see the words or track the text.

It’s become a favorite of several of my students, so I’m always looking for more activities I can use when we read it!
